Is coloring an activity you used to love doing as a kid?
Would you secretly or not so secretly love to indulge in this pleasure once again?
The thing is, this is not just a trivial activity for adults, it comes with tremendous health benefits and will also provide great help in your burnout or adrenal fatigue recovery process. Here are 3 benefits and reasons to get out those colored pencils or markers and get coloring.
BENEFIT #1
Activities that involve the fine motor movements of the hands have a stress reducing effect on the body.
Activities such as coloring, drawing, painting, knitting or writing are all great fine motor movement activities.
BENEFIT #2
As you color, you invoke a “relaxation response” within your body.
– the repetition of a sound, word, phrase or movement
– putting aside any thoughts as they arise and returning to the point of focus or repetition.
Coloring creates the perfect movement to make this happen and with the added focus of letting go of thoughts as they arise, you can create a very deep “relaxation response” and level of relaxation within your body.
BENEFIT #3
Creating this “relaxation response” creates an abundance of positive physiological changes in your body such as:
– a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure
– a lower pulse rate
– a reduction of cortisol output (one of the stress hormones)
– an increase in the production of the “feel-good” hormones such as dopamine and oxytocin.
I have used coloring for the past 8 years as a stress reducing activity. I find it to be one of the quickest ways to shift how I am feeling into a more relaxed and peaceful state. I also love getting out by the water and enjoying the benefits of nature at the same time as I am doing it.
In recent months, as well as coloring I decided to try my hand at designing my own mandalas. In fact, they are a combination of mandalas together with Zentangle ™patterns, which become known as a Zendala.
I ended up creating 36 of them, and decided to put them all together for you to color.
