Are you one of those people who struggle to fall asleep, or are you able to get to sleep but then wake up during the night?
Are you sleeping fitfully, having nightmares and waking up feeling like you’ve been sent through the wringer?
Is it a herculean effort to drag yourself out of bed every morning?
I know how tough this can be, especially when you must navigate a day in which you need to be active and alert.
Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the single most important things that you can do for your health and wellbeing, and it’s essential in helping your stressed body to recover. The double-edged sword of desperately needing sleep while the stress in your system is making it challenging for you to be able to sleep can be one of the greatest issues to deal with in your burnout recovery.
While there are many things to address when it comes to sleep, I wanted to draw your attention to one simple thing that I have found incredibly helpful over the years to help the quality and quality of sleep, and this is using a weighted blanket.
A weighted blanket works on the principle of deep touch pressure stimulation (DTPS) with a recommendation of a blanket that’s around 10% of your body weight to simulate the feeling of being hugged. The touch pressure activates your relaxation response, helping you to feel soothed and calm, giving you a better chance to drift off into a deep, restorative sleep.
There can be an adjustment period at first, and while you are getting used to it, you may choose to go with something that’s more around 3-5% of your body weight. Over time you will find that you get more used to it, and feel deeper benefits in the calming of your nervous system.
You can also use a weighted blanket on only some parts of your body. I like the extra weight on my feet and lower legs, so it really is up to you how you decide you want to use this.
At the very least it can be a cosy lap blanket during the day or evenings, helping you to relax more deeply in your waking hours, ultimately providing you with the benefit of better sleep anyway.
There is an abundance of companies around the globe where you can purchase these blankets. I love www.sensacalm.com.
