There are many ways you can use technology in a positive way, but it’s all too easy to flip over to the dark side with its use. You know you need space and downtime but find yourself constantly drawn to social media, getting caught down scrolling rabbit holes or binging Netflix for hours on end. You know it can take you into a catatonic, zombie-like state where you’re fixated on the screen or device. What you may not be realizing is that this raises your cortisol levels (amongst other stress hormones), while what you need to do is stop and enjoy some space that keeps your hormonal balance in check.
Let’s consider some ways you can work with technology to support you throughout your day.
🌟 Switch off your TV, computer, tablets and phones two hours before sleep, to help you calm that wired-at night-feeling. Instead you can read a book, have a bath, enjoy conversations that are not too thought-provoking or emotionally charged.
🌟 During the night, leave your phone out of the bedroom or at least turn off the wi-fi.
🌟 Leave your phone at home on occasion, for example when you’re going for a walk or to the shops.
🌟 Avoid getting into the default habit of checking social media whenever you have a spare minute. Begin to create strategies in advance, so you feel clear about how you want to use these snippets of time. A 1 minute breathing practice several times a day can be a game changer in your life.
🌟 Learn when to engage in activities and when to be still. Practise not taking immediate action on emails or phone messages.
🌟 Put your phone on silent. Check it when it feels good for you, so you practise a rhythm of being less reactive to your devices.
🌟 Create social media detox times; a Sunday off, a weekend off or a week’s break.
🌟 Take regular breaks from all technology. It could be two evenings a week, half a day on a Sunday or a full weekend each month. Cultivation of this technology-free space is gold to the calming of your nervous system.
Choosing even one of these ideas and committing to it for at least 30 days will provide a positive shift in your life, health and well-being.
